Virvolt, a French manufacturer of electric bike motors, is proud to announce a strategic partnership with eBikeLabs, a specialist in smart motor controller software for e-bikes. Together, they combine their expertise to offer a powerful rear hub motor dedicated to utility, cargo, and longtail bikes – a booming market segment.
This collaboration also marks a concrete first: the foldable cargo bike by Shwette Bicyclettes will be the first model to feature this new drive system, which will soon be produced in France. Here’s what you need to know.
A robust and intelligent motor for simplified daily use
With the surge in cargo bike sales and growing adoption by cycle logistics professionals, this collaboration aims to deliver a motor tailored to both private and professional use. Key technical features of the Virvolt 2000 motor include:
70 Nm of torque directly in the wheel and up to 1000 W peak power for dynamic acceleration, even when fully loaded
eBikeOS technology for smooth hill starts and easy transport of heavy loads
Regenerative braking to optimize range and achieve energy efficiency over 100%
Advanced diagnostics for simplified maintenance and extended motor lifespan
A strong commitment to French production and local industry
The Virvolt 2000 motors will be produced in France at the Flins Refactory (the former Renault Flins factory), through a phased industrial process:
Motor assembly and wheel lacing will begin in France in 2025
Progressive reshoring of parts manufacturing, including the housing and axles
Target: 70% of value added produced in France by 2026
Assembly, quality control, and packaging will be carried out by Renault operators, while Virvolt’s network of 350 partner stores in France, Belgium, and Switzerland will provide after-sales and repair services.
A bold ambition to boost the French utility bike market
As the utility bike market continues to grow, Virvolt and eBikeLabs aim to equip at least ten French bike manufacturers by 2025. The first to benefit from this cutting-edge motorization will be Shwette Bicyclettes, with an official launch at the Vélo in Paris expo in April 2025 and sales beginning in May 2025.
